Why this is a big deal...
Our Inland Empire (GRID IE) regional office, which serves Riverside, San Bernardino, and Inyo Counties, is seeking a PAID Solar Construction Assistant Intern to assist with PV installations and support various aspects of making solar happen for income-qualified families. Installations will be mostly on the homes of low-income families throughout the Inland Empire.

The Opportunity
The Solar Construction Assistant position is a PAID INTERNSHIP with GRID Alternatives intended for trainees to learn basic installation skills to pursue a career in solar installation, gain a good reference, connect to potential corporate and nonprofit networking opportunities, and gain valuable technical and professional work skills. The Solar Construction Intern will work under the direct supervision of the Senior Solar Installation Supervisor.

Responsibilities
Participate in the organizations equity, inclusion, and diversity work
Assist Construction staff with installing solar electric systems
Assist with site visits and permitting activities
Assist with inspections and service call activities
Assist Construction staff with staging, loading, and unloading equipment, including packing and unpacking parts, boxes, and bins from trucks/vans/trailers before and after installation projects
Assist Construction staff with receiving equipment and deliveries and picking up equipment and materials
With support from Construction staff, work towards Installation Basics Training certification, if applicable
Participate in career planning and placement activities
Other assignments may include participating in Outreach and Development tasks; attending meetings; updating spreadsheets, data entry, filing; answering homeowner and volunteer questions; talking to media; and generally participating in activities necessary to make solar happen for income-qualified families
What you need to bring to this role
Availability for a 12-week commitment for work up to 5 days, 30-40 hours per week as needed
General construction knowledge, experience, and skills
Passion for GRIDs mission related to renewable energy, community development, green jobs, and/or helping families and communities in need
Highly reliable, accountable, and detail-oriented
Self-12starter and ability to work independently as well as in a team
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (ability to work well with co-workers, volunteers and clients, ability to represent GRID Alternatives positively)
Strong teamwork, organizational, multi-tasking, and decision-making skills
Flexibility and willingness to embrace chang12e, go the extra mile, and bring ideas and energy to a rapidly evolving organization
Ability to relate to and work with diverse populations
Comfortable with computers (MS Office, especially excel, databases, Gmail/Google apps a plus)
Ability to lift up to 70 lbs. and familiarity with proper lifting procedures
Available to commit to the full internship program duration
MUST hold a valid drivers license with a clean driving record, have reliable transportation to get to and from work, including the GRID IE Riverside office and/or various build locations across Riverside and San Bernardino counties OR proof of up-to-date vaccination status which may grant access to the GRID fleet's carpool
MUST be willing to test weekly for Covid-19, if not vaccinated, and follow all of GRID Alternatives' Covid-19 safety policies
Hired CA candidates must be able to pass a screening for drugs that are illegal in the state of California, including: amphetamine, cocaine metabolite, opiates, and PCP.

It would be great if you also had
Previous volunteer experience with GRID Alternatives
Experience in training and/or working with volunteers
PV system installation experience
Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred but not required

Where you will sit & the places you may go
Our office and warehouse are in Riverside, CA. This position requires work in the early mornings, some late evenings, and some weekends. This position may require up to 25% out-of-town travel to regional offices and special projects, as well as local travel for meetings, events, and job sites throughout the Inland Empire.
GRID Alternatives provides vehicles for work travel, and due to COVID-19 current guidelines, we may also require limited personal vehicle use. In the latter instance, GRID will provide travel reimbursement for work-related personal vehicle use in accordance with our payroll schedule and policies. Additionally, all applicants will need a valid drivers license and good driving record to be considered.
